Fall in Texas means crisp evenings, golden leaves, and plenty of reasons to head outdoors. From pumpkin patches and corn mazes to hayrides and fall festivals, the season is packed with family-friendly events. But with big crowds and busy attractions also comes an unfortunate reality, opportunistic thieves who see these gatherings as the perfect chance to snatch an unattended bag, lift a wallet, or slip something out of your stroller while you’re taking that perfect photo.
Don’t worry! Your autumn adventures don’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation, you can keep your focus where it belongs: on the caramel apples, the games, and the memories.
Leave unnecessary valuables at home. If you don’t absolutely need it, don’t bring it. For essentials like your phone, keys, and ID, use a crossbody bag or zippered backpack worn securely in front of you in crowded spaces. Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses!
Pumpkin patch parking lots are often wide open and unmonitored (unless they called us and have our surveillance trailer) Always lock your car, roll up windows, and keep bags and electronics out of sight. Pro tip: don’t “hide” items in the trunk after you arrive, thieves often watch for this. Be aware of your surroundings and the area you choose to park.
This is a given as parents, but festivals can get hectic quickly. Consider taking a group photo at the start of the day so you have an up-to-date picture of your child’s outfit if you get separated. Brightly colored clothing also makes kids easier to spot in a crowd. Discuss a meeting point with your child(ren) in case you get separated, and create a “password” that way the child can be sure it is a trusted adult if/when a stranger tries to help find them.
As the sun sets earlier, find routes with good lighting when walking to and from your car or around the venue. Shadows and dark corners make it easier for thieves to act unnoticed. Wearing glow in the dark bracelets and/or necklaces also provides some light and visibility when walking at dusk.
Whether it’s an older child heading to the petting zoo or an adult splitting off for a food run, it’s always safer in pairs, especially in larger venues or after dark. Sticking together not only reduces the chance of getting lost in a crowd, but also discourages potential opportunists who may target someone alone. Plus, having a buddy means you can keep an eye out for each other’s belongings and make the outing more enjoyable
At Sentry, we believe safety isn’t just something you think about at home. It’s something you carry with you, whether you’re at a school football game, a local charity event, or picking the perfect pumpkin with your kids. That’s why 100% of the proceeds donated to Sentry Cares goes toward providing security systems for survivors and families in crisis, as well as protecting schools, community centers, places of worship, and small nonprofits.
Just like you protect your family at the pumpkin patch, Sentry Cares works year-round to protect our community. Together, we can make sure safety is part of every season.
